Western Electric model 1E single slot payphone dated 3/78. It operation is similar to the old 193G, 212G and many other post pay 3 slot payphones. The caller would lift the handset, listen for dial tone and dial the desired number. After hearing a second dial tone a deposit in this case of 20 cents for a local call would be made. This phone came from Kansas. It has the original gray handset. Note the instruction plate in the upper left corner that was used on the 1E models. The upper housing lock is a 29A-61 and the vault lock is a 30B.
